Put significant thought into your preparation: what are the key messages you want to convey, what’s the overall feeling you’d like your colleague to leave the meeting with
Consider the logistics of the discussion: A space that allows for confidentiality and proximity of sitting adjacent will improve the flow of the conversation
Open with the agenda: Put your colleague at ease by letting them know what to expect e.g. we’ll look at four key areas today … then encourage open dialogue


Encourage candid discussion: This is the time to talk about your point of view and its also the time to find out what your colleague thinks
Give praise and credit where it is due and don’t shy away from dealing with issues
Gain agreement at each step of the discussion to ensure that both points of view have been heard and you’ve reached a mutual understanding of their working world and future before you close the review

Assessing Performance

Recognise and acknowledge good performance and reinforce plans for getting your colleague back on track when there have been issues or goals haven’t been met
Be attuned to perceptions and suggestions to achieving and exceeding results and also pay close attention to problem areas
Probe strengths and weaknesses to identify skills and attributes that will drive performance, and shortfalls that are holding individuals back from achieving their performance goals
